Shorinji kempo
At the core of shorinji kempo are effective self defence techniques and practical Kongo Zen philosophy. The training aims to develop the potential of the individual and create balanced people, both mentally and physically. It aims to instil a student with the confidence needed to stand up for their ideals and the ability to defend their position. In this way they can help others and benefit society as a whole. The self defence techniques incorporate both hard and soft techniques: goho and juho. Goho is the hard or active system, comprising swift, accurate and scientifically based punches, kicks, dodges and blocks. Juho is the soft or passive system, used when grabbed or held against one's will. They comprise releasing or throwing the opponent and applying locks to subdue them. The two systems are used hand in hand to create a unique all round system of self defence based on technique rather than strength, capable of repelling any form of attack. The teachings also include seiho and zazen meditation. Seiho is a therapeutic acupressure massage system used to relax muscles, relieve tension and regulate circulation. Zazen, or seated, meditation is practiced during every class to calm the mind and regulate breathing control. |
Marylebone branch
Welcome to the Marylebone branch of the BSKF. Our doors are always open to new and existing students to join us training in central London. Our branch instructors have all studied under the tutelage of one of the leading shorinji kempo instructors in the world - Mizuno Sensei, 8th Dan. Mizuno Sensei was a student of So Doshin, the founder of shorinji kempo. In 1974 Sensei Mizuno moved to the UK and established the British Shorinji Kempo Federation (BSKF), and has taught this self defence martial art in the UK for over 40 years. The BSKF has grown significantly under his guidance, and over the years many of his students have gone on to open their own branches all over the UK. |
